So, diving right in.....

1. What is your favourite quote?

"Though she be but little, she is fierce" - Shakespeare

(Obviously a natural Girlboss with that one. LOVE.)

2. What are you reading at the moment?

Lol who has time to read!?..I think the last book I read was a Susanna Roberts one before I had Mr (2.5 years ago!) LOL how bad is that!?

3. If you could be anywhere in the world where would it be?

I'd love to go to anywhere in Europe for the day, with a coffee in hand, nowhere to be, nothing to do and my hubby on my arm (sans kids coz man how I long for just some kid free time!)

4. What do you want to be remembered for?

For being kind, hardworking, a good mama and a good friend.

5. How did KP Designs start?  Was it meant to be just a hobby or did you always see it as a business?

It started as a hobby type business when Mr was a newborn, I wanted a way to be able to stay home with him, but help out with the bills.  It has just blossomed from there 🙂

6. You have a hubby and two beautiful babies, how do you manage the juggling act of work and life?

Haha, I'm probably the WORST at time management (ask my hubby). But, the things that help are staying on top of household chores, like washing and meals etc. Then making sure you plan your days and weeks. Otherwise a lot can fall through the cracks when you have a sick kid to deal with. If you have a plan and the main tasks taken care of then it's easier to pick up where you left off.

7. What does a day in your life look like?

Get up around 7am - boil jug to make a milo for M and a coffee for me (this is with babe on my hip and toddler at my ankles). Pop some toast in the toaster and then sit down to feed the babe. Turn some Peppa Pig on for Mr and away we go. I pretty much stay home unless I need to run errands or go to mums group. My days revolve around the kids and work. Kids first. Always. Like today, not much work has been done because I had 3 loads of washing to hang, courier parcels to get out, a teething babe and a irritated toddler (post concussion last week). So, I'm quickly typing this up while they have both just woken from 15min cat naps, oh my life! Then no work will really get done besides an email here and there until they are in bed. Then my time begins haha. #mumlife

(The fact that you took the time to sit and answer these questions on such a hectic day is crazy! haha.  But, we totally appreciate it x.)

8. Your little peg people and your prints are beautiful, where does your inspiration come from?

Most of my inspiration just comes from things around me, my kids, my garden, or just random thoughts that pop into my head while I'm meant to be sleeping at 2am!

9. What is the biggest challenge you face being the owner of a small creative business?

For me it's taking things too personally, this business is me, and I am it. I put everything I have into it, and when something doesn't do as well as I thought, it really hits me in the feels personally. That and when you face things like someone copying you, or taking your creative ideas, it can get a little personal haha. Maintaining a business from home does get a little isolating, apart from an amazing mums business group I am part of, I don't think i would still be running. They keep me sane!

10. What does the future hold for KP Designs?

I can only hope its onwards and upwards! I would love to be able to continue this, and to continue creating art, designs and creations for you all. And, for it to continue to help support my family, so I can stay home and watch my babies grow up.

11. If there was one piece of advice you could give to someone who is wanting to turn their passion or hobby in to a business what would that be?

Do it properly. Start from the bottom, with your original ideas, create your business centered around a plan and grow it from there. Stand tall and persevere - it can get hard trying to stand out from the crowd, but if you trust in your product, others will see that and it will flourish.

(I am currently in this process, so I will definitely be taking this advice!)

Girl Boss - Sarah Carruthers - Beauty On Baverstock

I am so excited to be introducing to you our first Girl Boss to feature on For Eva After. Welcome Sarah!

First of all, a big thank you for taking the time to share with us what you are up to in your world.

Just before we get in to it, I met Sarah when I started working for an I.T. company doing administration work.  Our snug working conditions in the reception area meant it would be a make or break relationship. Luckily we hit it off and bonded over our love of books, Pinterest, food, nails and plenty of other things (with a bit of work thrown in for good measure haha).

What I know about Sarah is that she is a hard worker and exceptional at managing her often demanding day job.  She is also a great friend.  When we were working together, my personal life was in tatters.  She was always empathetic, supportive, listened and I knew I could go to her for advice when needed. She is obsessed with the colour purple and absolutely loves her fur baby, Rusty.

Meet the fur baby, Rusty.

Outside of her 9-5 job, Sarah has a little nail business called Beauty On Baverstock, but I'll let her share more about that (and herself)....

So, lets get started

What are five of your favourite things in life?

  1. Experimenting with new and different nail designs and techniques.
  2. Art and photography.
  3. Hanging out with friends.
  4. My dog, Rusty.
  5. Relaxing with a good book.

If you could do anything what would that be?

The travel bug caught me when I went to Europe last year with my partner.  We visited Italy, Spain, France, Holland, London and then went to Dubai on the way home.  I have been to Australia a few times and am booked to head to Fiji in May.  I cannot wait!  Safe to say if I could do anything it would be to do more traveling.  I would love to see the sights of America and relax in Hawaii.  I also have my heart set on a cruise around the Greek Islands.

(I don't know about you but that sounds AMAZING!)

Did you always want to get in to the beauty industry?

Not really, haha.  It wasn’t something I ever thought of doing after I finished school.  I didn’t actually know what I wanted to do!  I saw an advert in the paper for a beauty school and thought it would be something fun.  So, I packed up and moved from my home town of Gisborne to Hamilton and gave it a go.

How long have you had Beauty on Baverstock up and running?

Beauty on Baverstock has been up and running for about three years now.  I turned one of our spare rooms in to a nail studio. I still run it from home bu,t I have definitely updated all of the furnishings to not only look more professional but to put a little of my own personality in to the space (hence all the purple).

What made you want to start Beauty on Baverstock and what were the steps you took to get in up and running?

I've always loved having nice polished nails.  Before I first heard of Gel Polish I was painting my nails with your normal polish every few days as I hated when they started to chip. (We all know how time consuming this can be!).   A friend of mine was doing Gel Polish manicures from home so I went and had mine done from her a few times.  I absolutely loved how it dried straight away and how it didn’t chip for weeks.  There were so many different designs she was able to achieve which I also loved.  Basically it all started from here.

I could easily do this myself, so I bought some cheap Gel Polish and a lamp and was just doing my own nails for a while.  All my friends loved my nails so I starting doing theirs too. Then I decided to invest in a wider range of polish colours and a better LED lamp.  This made sure that I had a produced a better quality result at a shorter processing time.

I started to get a few more clients just through word of mouth of my friends. This is when I decided to turn my spare room into my nail salon. I've also advertised on Facebook and Treat-Me a few times so that’s how started a regular group of clients.

Have you had formal training or are you self taught?

When I first moved to Hamilton I studied at Elite International School of Beauty and Spa Therapies which gave me a Diploma in Beauty Therapy. I have also completed a couple of day courses specific in nail art and design, but most of my designs are self taught.  I just love practicing on myself and trying out different techniques.  I find this is the best way to learn.

What do you love most about what you do?

When I was at school one of my favourite subjects was art and the desire to have a creative outlet has sill always been there.  My most favourite aspect about what I do is getting to create new designs that my clients love.

How many clients did you start with and how many do you have now?

I only started with a few of my friends and now I average about 3-4 clients per week.  But, I am only doing nails part time so there has to be a limit on the number of people I can serve.  Hopefully one day when I get to work in my business full time I will be able to grow my customer base substantially.

Where do you see yourself, both in your business and personally, in five years?

Hopefully have traveled to a few more new places.
Enjoying our newly built home, with my new nail room offering more beauty services.
Maybe have a kid or two while working full time from home as a Beauty Therapist/Nail Technician.

What do you do to relax?

As mentioned earlier I love reading. So, nestled down in a comfy chair with a good book is my idea of relaxing.

As you also have a 9-5 job as well as your own business, how do you maintain a work life balance?

My nail business is a hobby of mine and something I really enjoy doing.  So, when I finish work at five and then do nails it doesn’t feel like I'm still working.  I also always try to have weekends off from both my job and my business so I can still do all the other things I enjoy.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to turn their passion or hobby in to a business?

I've always tried to do is still keep the ‘hobby’ mentality going. Once you focus away from that I find that you tend to lose the enjoyment out of what you are doing. I know if it was my full time job there would be a certain profit side of things that would be a factor, but right now that’s not my main focus. I just love doing nails.  So, basically my advice to someone who would like to take the next step in turning their passion in to a business is to keep your focus on the reason you started in the first place, mine was painting nails getting to be creative.  This will keep your passion alive.

Awesome!  Thank you so much for taking the time to share a bit about what you do with us.

Where can we find you?
